Mircea cel Batran nr. 119, telefon 0241/ 672.599, Constanta. ................................................ „The tragedy of INDEPENDENAcA vessel – the greatest catastrophy in the history of Romanian maritime navigation??o (summary) On November 15, 2008, 29 years will have passed since the greatest catastrophy in the history of Romanian maritime navigation, a terrible tragedy in the waters of Marmara Sea, at the entrance to the Bosfor strait, which lead to the death of 42 Romanian sailors. The construction of the first and greatest ship in the Romanian fleet began on July, 22, 1976, when the dry shipbuilding dock from the Constantza Shipyard welcomed the first construction block. The ship\'s layout inside the dock needed 10 months to complete. Having a 150.000 tdw displacement, „IndependenALa??o was the greatest ship ever built in Romania, being considered the foremost ship of the Romanian commercial fleet... The ship’s naming ceremony took place on May, 27, 1977, present being also the tirranic couple Nicolae and Elena CeauAYescu. The event was a fiasco, as the bottled of champagne launched by Elena CeauAYescu did not break, only hitting the ship’s sheating. The incident was considered a bad sign and everybody though it was a curse... In the morning of November,15, 1979, while coming back from its 19th voyage, „IndependenALa??o was sailing in Marmara Sea, waiting for the pilot, in order to pass the Bosfor strait towards the Black Sea. At 04,35 AM – Turkish time, the Romanian tanker hit the Greek ship called „Evriali??o. The collision provoked the break of the warehouses of the Romanian tanker and the oil’s falling into the sea. Because of the sparks produced by metallic friction, huge combustions were produced, making the ship smash in a chaos of fire and smoke. From the 45 people in the ship\'s crew, 42 died, 11 of whom were never to be found. Only three Romanian sailors managed to be saved. The fire continued for 29 days, being extinguished on the morning of December, 14, 1979. Because of the serious situation it was found in, „IndependenALa??o ship was considered a total and final loss... This terrible accident was caused by the Greek master of the „Evriali??o cargo, Alekos Adamopulos, aged 29, who initially was put under surveillance and not allowed to leave Turkey, but subsequently was arrested, judged and convicted to stay 20 months in prison. As the detention period which had to be made was turned into money, the murderer paid USD 850 and was released... It most certainly was the greatest catastrophy in the history of the Romanian maritime navigation. It was a dreadful tragedy, in which 42 Romanian sailors lost their lives. It was a huge drama which left behind a lot of widows and 45 orphans, destroyed souls, coffins, crosses, tombs in land and water, crumbled destinies, bleak memories... It was the TITANIC of Romanian fleet... The Constantza journalist Constantin CUMP?N? pubished, in October 2006, the documentary book „Tragedia navei INDEPENDENAcA - cea mai mare catastrof?f din istoria navigaALiei maritime romAcneAYti??o (« Tragedy of INDEPENDENTA vessel – the greatest catastrophy in the history of the Romanian maritime sailing ») , work seen as a homage to the 42 Romanian sailors deceased in the greatest naval catastrophy in the history of the Romanian maritime navigation, to their widows and offsprings, as well as to all sailors with tombs in ground and water, who disappeared in naval accidents over time. The author did not employed this subject in a „sensaALional??o manner and nor did he launched hypotheses which could promote more of a conspiracy theory, that the brute reality of the event itself, but rather presented documents, notes, items of information, testimonioes and photographs about the terrible tragedy, but also about the drama of the families and offsprings who suffered after the loss of their beloved ones.
